The Port Authority recovered 84% of the waste generated during 2024.
The various systems implemented at the Port of Marín for the selective collection and reuse of waste by the Port Authority, refrigeration facilities, and export departments, among others, resulted in the removal of 1,153 tons of waste during 2024. The consolidation of selective waste collection at the port by the Port Authority and the port services company Cantodarea, along with the increasing awareness of users, facilitates the port's management of different types of waste.
Thus, once municipal solid waste and similar materials, which account for 16% of the total, were excluded, the remaining 84% was recoverable during the past year thanks to source separation, surpassing the 82% recovered in 2023.
Waste management systems have been extended to an increasing number of facilities throughout the port community in recent years. As a result, between 2013 and 2024, nearly twelve million kilograms of waste material were selectively removed.
The Port of Marín is fully committed to the environmental management of waste related to maritime and port activities. The largest volume of waste separated at source during 2024 consisted of plastics, followed by paper and cardboard, fishing nets, and other significant quantities of wood scraps, tires, and polystyrene foam.
13.5 tons of marine litter were also removed during 2024. This week, the containers for the Upcycling the Oceans project were launched for the removal and recycling of marine litter through an agreement signed between the Port Authority, Ecoembes and Ecoalf.
