Busy day at the port with eight merchant ships operating simultaneously
The logistics activity for various strategic goods in the region is intensifying these days at the Port of Marín, with several vessels operating simultaneously in the harbor. Specifically, today up to eight merchant ships are operating at the Marín docks.
Four of them are unloading frozen fish for the port's cold storage facilities. These are the Frio Marathon at the West Commercial Dock, the Igueldo at the North Fishing Dock, the Montelourido at the East Dock, and the Monteferro at the South Commercial Dock. Frozen fish is one of the strategic commodities for the Port of Marín, as the cold storage companies located in the harbor, primarily dedicated to the reception, storage, and processing of frozen fish, are one of the main economic drivers for the entire region. Many of the port's cold storage facilities also have fish processing plants, one of the activities that creates the most jobs in the area. The Port of Marín has a total cold storage capacity of approximately 262,000 cubic meters, all concentrated in a single facility.
In addition to the freezers, two cargo ships carrying steel products are currently operating in the port. These are the Wilson Hull, arriving from the port of Ijmuiden, and the Anna, arriving from Dunkirk. Between them, they will unload more than 5,000 tons of steel plate coils. Furthermore, the Sloman Discharger is loading 1,500 tons of wind turbine components and is scheduled to depart tomorrow night for the French port of Radicatel.
Finally, the bull carrier Montara is unloading grain at the Leirós dock, bringing more than 26,000 tons of agri-food bulk cargo to the port. Another bulk carrier with an additional 27,000 tons of grain is expected to arrive early next week. Up to April, the traffic of agri-food bulk goods grew by 15.65% in the port compared to the first four months of last year.
