The Port Authority Begins Maritime Work for the Rehabilitation of the Camoucos Beacon Tower
The Port Authority of Marín will begin maritime work in the coming days to rehabilitate the Camoucos beacon tower, one of the main maritime signaling elements in the estuary. This project, with a budget of 1.5 million euros, is highly complex due to the location of the beacon. The work, awarded to the company Marcor Xove, consists of reinforcing the tower's foundation to guarantee its structural stability, as it is located in an area highly exposed to waves and wind, as well as the demolition and reconstruction of part of the tower. The necessary materials for the project have been stockpiled at the port's transverse quay. A pontoon will also be used to allow the work to be carried out afloat, similar to what the Port Authority did a few years ago when the Picamillo beacon tower was completely rebuilt. Specifically, the work in Camoucos will be carried out by constructing an outer concrete ring that encircles the foundation and will be filled with reinforced concrete to strengthen the structure. The current 13-meter-high tower will be demolished using diamond wire cutting and subsequently rebuilt. The foundation base will be reused through encapsulation. This option avoids blasting and the generation of waste. While the works are underway, a temporary beacon system will be installed to maintain the tower's maritime signaling function. The Camoucos beacon tower is one of the main maritime signals in the Pontevedra Estuary. Although it was built on April 8, 1931, it was first lit two years later, on October 18, 1933. Located on the northern part of Ons Island to mark dangerous rocky shoals, it is equipped with a red port-side mark with a range of 10 nautical miles. The Port Authority plans to rehabilitate another of the estuary's beacon towers, the Mourisca tower, as part of its Investment Plan. This tower is 13 meters high and has a green starboard lateral mark with a range of 5 nautical miles. Both are essential elements for ensuring navigational safety within the Pontevedra Estuary.
