The Port of Marín Continues to Grow in the Frozen Seafood Sector
By the end of August, the Port of Marín had handled nearly 90,000 tonnes of frozen seafood in various forms. It recorded increases during the first eight months of the year in the handling of this cargo—both containerized and non-containerized—and is currently seeing significant offloading volumes this October from the fleet operating in the waters off the Falkland Islands (Malvinas). José Benito Suárez Costa, President of the Port Authority of Marín and Ría de Pontevedra, is currently attending Conxemar, an international frozen seafood trade fair now in its 27th edition. At the event, he highlighted the "significance and importance of the companies from the Port of Marín," many of which are exhibiting in their own dedicated spaces to showcase their services and new offerings. The Port of Marín’s cold storage facilities provide reception, storage, and processing services for frozen seafood; they serve as a key economic engine for the entire region due to their potential for local job creation, with many facilities also operating their own fleets and additional fish processing areas. The Port Authority President noted the substantial investment made by these cold storage plants, which are clearly prioritizing energy efficiency and sustainability in alignment with the Port Authority’s environmental strategy. Additionally, the President of the Port of Marín is using the Conxemar event to establish new contacts with refrigerated cargo operators, shipping lines, and shipping agents. His goal is to showcase the wide range of services the port offers for this type of cargo, including the option for refrigerated rail transport. Suárez Costa highlighted Marín’s specialization in handling frozen cargo, noting that the facility features over 75,000 square meters of concession area dedicated to cold-storage operations and a refrigerated storage capacity exceeding 260,000 cubic meters.
